The inaugural exhibition of Artsake collective, a collective that I have co-founded which offers the opportunity for emerging artists to showcase their work within a number of spaces in and around London.

This exhibition took place at the Old Police Station in Deptford, the four artist's work that Artsake selected was shown in the four cells of the police station.  Curating the exhibition was an exciting opportunity to utilise the space itself and to ponder over its history and past use.  Attempting not to overcrowd the space became an important factor, allowing the viewer to visualise the cells whilst being able to see the work within them. Some pieces worked better within the space, not appearing too overbearing and almost echoing the coldness of the cell, creating a unity.  Other works allowed for a disjointed communication: our expectation of the artwork to be within a white space creates this.  The cell spaces allow this to be put into question disjointing history and the modern.

The exhibition created challenges through attempting to mould together disparate mediums, yet through the process this divergence created similarities and contradictions that led to a collection of work, contrary from what is usually envisaged.
